DUO: Leeward Hat and Mitts

I continue exploring crochet cables, this time in a simple, lovely way. This technique appears in Chapter 5 of the New Ways with Crochet book and you can also find this simple cable in the Moonwake sweater and Moonflower wrap.

The Leeward fingerless mitts are an easy and quick cable project. The pattern includes detailed instructions and a photo tutorial for the cables. While the tutorial is given for the short mitts, the same technique applies to the long version, both of which are included in the pattern.

The Leeward Hat is a perfect companion to the Leeward Mitts. Simple stitches - single crochet and its variations (esc, fsc) - form a beautiful cable design, accented by ribbing ridges for added texture.

It’s recommended to start with the mitts first to familiarize yourself with the technique, as the hat introduces a more complex variation of the cables combined with short rows.

Yarn: Malabrigo Arroyo; sport weight; 335 yds / 306 m per 100 g skein; 100% Superwash Merino Wool, Cape Cod Gray colorway AR429

20 sts and 18 rows = 4″ (10 cm) worked in ribbing st patt only, after blocking

MEASUREMENTS & YARDAGE
The measurements below are for the fabric in its unstretched state. The single crochet ribbing is very stretchy and will fit most sizes comfortably. The hat is shown in the photos worn over a 21¼″ (54 cm) head circumference.

SHORT MITTS
