Knitting: As You Go slippers
Once a year, I knit. ◍•ᴗ•◍
Even though I’ve switched entirely to crochet, there is one knitting project that has stayed with me all these years, and I always return to it!
These are the slippers my mom taught me to knit, which I later adapted to my own style. The blue ones in the photo below are the version I kept making for years. Garter stitch, cute stripes, and a smooth, easy process.
Every year, I knitted lots of pairs as Christmas gifts for family and friends. And when I started working on reducing my yarn stash, they became my go-to stash-busting project.
Construction
These slippers can be made with any yarn, in any size, and at any gauge.
The only thing you need to determine before you start is the ankle circumference, whether you’re making tiny booties for a baby or slippers for a grown-up.
The ankle is your starting point, and from there, the slipper grows naturally to the size you need, both in foot length and depth. You simply stop when it reaches the right size.
Colorwork
The pattern uses only garter stitch, so it’s all knit stitches. And the colorwork options are so fun!
You can use two colors to create stripes all over the slipper, or work it entirely in one color, either to show off the texture or to let a multicolored yarn do the work.
You can also combine the two, working stripes on the upper part and keeping the sole in one color, or the other way around.
Yarn and gauge
Any yarn that keeps your feet warm works!
All my acrylic stash and itchy wool went into these slippers (most of my family wore them over socks anyway). I also used a special skein of Noro that I couldn’t find a way to use in crochet. Held double, and voilà!
The As You Go Slippers knitting pattern is now available on Etsy, Ravelry, and Cup of Stitches.
I hope these slippers will bring you as much joy and excitement as they have brought me over the years! ◍•ᴗ•◍
Simple, quick to knit, and perfect for using up yarn leftovers, these slippers are knitted in one piece in garter stitch, with two colors creating the stripes. They grow as you knit and can be made in any size, with any yarn weight.
