New Ways with Crochet: A Stitch to Try!

There is a stitch in the book that I would probably skip at first glance, because it doesn't look very bold or eye-catching. But in fact, it is extremely useful and often needed in projects: the Twisted Eyelet stitch from Chapter 1.

I don't usually use it on its own, but I love adding it as a gentle row of tiny, airy eyelets.

Unfortunately, in the book the original stitch was replaced with the wrong one (it says esc2tog instead of esc), but the instructions themselves and "how-to" note are correct.

So here, I'd like to show you how to crochet it and also let you know that I'll be adding an errata page, where you'll be able to see updates.

Twisted Eyelet stitch

Start: Сhain a multiple of 2.
Row 1 (RS): Ch 1 (does not count as a st), 1 sc in back ridge (bump) of each ch to end. Turn.

Row 2 (WS): Ch 1, 1 esc in BLO of first and second st at the same timeꜛ, *ch 1, 1 esc in BLO of next 2 sts at the same time; rep from * to end, 1 esc. Turn.

ꜛHow to: Insert your hook in back loop of first st in direction from front to back (as usual), then insert it in back loop of second st in direction from back to front, yo and pull up a loop, yo, draw through one loop on hook, yo, draw through two loops on hook.

Row 3: Ch 1, 1 sc in each st and ch-sp to end. Turn.
Row 4: Ch 1, 1 esc, *1 esc in BLO of next 2 sts at the same time, ch 1; rep from * to last st, 1 esc. Turn.
Row 5: As Row 3.

Rep Rows 2-5.

Pic 1. The back loops of two next stitches are highlighted with pink. You will be working your esc stitch into both of these loops at the same time.

Pic 2. Insert your hook in back loop of the first stitch in direction from front to back (as usual)...

Pic 3. Then insert your hook in back loop of the second stitch in direction from back to front.

Pic 4. Work extended single crochet stitch in these two loops: yo and pull up a loop, yo, draw through one loop on hook, yo, draw through two loops on hook.

Pic 5. In the next row, work sc in each esc and chain space.

Pic 6. This is the right side of the stitch pattern, with the next row of single crochet stitches finished.

Note that I am showing this stitch over my swatch of the Marigold stitch from page 20. This is what I really suggest you do: instead of making a whole swatch, simply try it out on any crochet piece you have in your hands.

Just work a couple of stitches, play with them, and frog them later. ◍•ᴗ•◍

Experiment!

The eyelets can be worked in a honeycomb layout (as in the stitch instructions) or placed directly above each other by repeating just one esc row (either Row 2 or 4).

You can also replace the sc rows with double crochet (or any other stitch).

This Twisted Eyelet stitch is used in the Daydream shawl from Chapter 1 as a single row of eyelets and in the Morning Mist shawl from Chapter 5 as a filler between the cables, but it is listed as esc2tog.

I am very sorry for this mistake and hope this explanation helps you enjoy the stitch as it was meant to be used!
